  • Calibration tool (if required by scanner)

  • Scan bodies (for implant cases only)

Hardware:

Consumables:

  • Scanning spray or powder (if scanner does not use true color technology)

  • Intraoral scanner spare tips

Output:

  • STL / PLY / OBJ files ready for design

Note:
If the clinic does not have a scanner, the impression can be taken conventionally and scanned in a partner lab.

2. Design (CAD)

Purpose: Create a virtual model of the crown.

Required software:

  • Exocad DentalCAD (Chairside or Lab version), 3Shape Dental System, or CEREC Chairside Software

  • Ivoclar IPS e.max CAD library (if required by CAD software)

Hardware:

    Exocad: System Requirements

  • Optional 3D mouse for modeling convenience

Consumables:

  • None (software stage only)

Notes:
If the clinic has no CAD software, design can be outsourced to a dental lab.
The designed file (STL) will then be returned for milling.

3. Milling (CAM)

Purpose: Fabricate the crown from an IPS e.max CAD block.

Required equipment:

  • Dental milling machine (wet-capable, e.g., Imes-Icore CORiTEC One / One+)

  • CAM software (MillBox / hyperDENT / etc.)

  • IPS e.max CAD block holder (adapter)
Imes-Icore CORiTEC One includes 1-Fold or 3-Fold Glass Ceramic holders
Imes-Icore CORiTEC One+ includes 6-Fold Glass Ceramic Holder

Consumables and tools:

Maintenance:

Check the maintenance booklet to get more details - Imes-Icore: Maintenance Booklet

If no milling unit:
Send STL to a lab that mills IPS e.max CAD; they can return the “blue stage” restoration for crystallization in-clinic.

4. Post-Milling Finishing

Purpose: Refine the milled surface and remove connectors.

Required tools:

  • Fine-grit diamond rotary instruments

  • Ceramic polishing burs

  • Turbine, handpiece, micromotor

  • Ultrasonic cleaner

Consumables:

  • Alcohol wipes or cleaning solution

  • Disposable gloves and brushes

Notes:
Perform gentle finishing only; excessive pressure can cause microcracks.

5. Crystallization (Furnace Stage)

Purpose: Strengthen and achieve the final shade of the e.max CAD crown.

Required equipment:

  • Ceramic furnace capable of crystallization (Dekema AUSTROMAT® 624i Dental Firing Furnace)

  • Crystallization tray and pins

  • Dekema Firing tray, set (Art. No.106490) - Included with the Dekema Austromat 624i

  • IPS e.max CAD Crystallization Tray / Pins

  • IPS Object Fix Putty or Flow (to support restoration during firing)

Consumables and Tools:

  • IPS e.max CAD Crystall/Glaze Paste or Spray

  • Cleaning brush

  • Tweezers SKU: 105236 - Included with the Dekema Austromat 624i

Firing parameters:

  • 840–850 °C / hold 25–30 min (refer to manufacturer program)

Maintenance:

  • Furnace calibration kit (for temperature verification)
  • CALIBRITETM fire set SKU: 101817-01  - Included with the Dekema Austromat 624i
  • CALIBRITETM fire wire SKU: 101821-01  - Included with the Dekema Austromat 624i

If no furnace:
Send the milled “blue stage” crown to a partner lab for crystallization and glazing.

6. Staining and Glazing (Optional)

Purpose: Customize color and achieve gloss.

Required materials:

  • IPS e.max CAD Glaze Paste or Spray

  • IPS e.max Stains

  • Brushes and mixing palette

Equipment:

  • Same furnace as above

Consumables:

  • Isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning)

  • Glazing firing pins and tray paper

Note:
Keep stains and glaze materials refrigerated when not in use.

7. Try-In and Surface Conditioning

Purpose: Check fit and prepare the crown for bonding.

Tools and consumables:

  • Fit checker or disclosing material

  • Micro-brushes

  • Sandblaster with Al₂O₃ ≤ 50 µm (1–2 bar)

  • Etching gel (5% HF, e.g., IPS Ceramic Etching Gel)

  • Silane coupling agent (Monobond Plus)

  • Drying air syringe or oil-free compressed air

If no sandblaster:
Clean the crown thoroughly with ultrasonic alcohol bath.

8. Cementation

Purpose: Secure the restoration to the tooth.

Required materials:

  • Rubber dam isolation system

  • Universal adhesive (e.g., Adhese Universal)

  • Resin cement:

    • Variolink Esthetic DC/LC (Ivoclar)
